40 words of Lent: Darkness (4/2/2021)

Matthew 27:45a "..darkness came over the whole land..."

The light of the world
in the life of Jesus Christ
                 was extinguished.

Darkness descended
the world in grief and sorrow
               remains
    sitting in pain and uncertainty
contemplating the depths of God's love
that was born on that cross

Darkness descended

Darkness mutes our senses,
    draws us into ourselves,
into the raw-ness of our inner lives.

Darkness invites us to reflect
      to dwell in this moment
        to saturate our souls
with the depths of God's love

Darkness came over the whole world
the world in which Jesus was birthed
the world in in which Jesus taught
                 and healed
                      and loved
            the world that rejected him
                   betrayed
                        denied
                           abandoned

Darkness descended
       and our eyes adjusted
            seeing ourselves
                 and the world
           in a new way
         with the nuances of shadows
               shading
                   texture
                       dimensions

Darkness descended
           blanketing us with grace
              lovingly enfolding
                 mercifully cleansing

Darkness awaits
           the dawn of new life
                   love resurrected
                          Messiah revealed
