40 words of Lent: Silence(4/3/2021)

I Kings 19:11-12

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence."

Have you ever had the experience of sheer silence?   We live in a world with all kinds of noises.  Even if we turn off our televisions or computers, there is still a low hum in the background.

Have you ever just sat in silence?
        Not thinking?
           Not doing?
    Just being

I imagine that after the curtain was torn in two and the stone was rolled in front of the tomb, silence descended.

What could be said?
     What more could be done?

Numb with grief and disbelief; shamed by betrayal, denial and abandonment
                 Jesus' followers were silent
                      The world sat in silence
                            silence
                                silence

On this day between, take the opportunity to just sit in silence.  Imagine yourself before the tomb with no more to do, nothing to say - but just silence
